Why Now!
When the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) presented Mary Ellen Copeland with the 2009 Voice Award for her work as a leader in the mental health movement (PR Newswire, 2009), it marked a recognition that WRAP had emerged from the fringes and was now an integral part of the nation's behavioral health system.  The new research findings by Dr. Judith Cook have validated the efficacy of WRAP.  As we enter the second decade of the 21st century, WRAP is being implemented by behavioral health departments, mental health agencies, substance abuse treatment programs, and by an array of other recovery groups in the United States and across the globe.  What began as a tiny seed of hope, planted by a few courageous individuals, has grown into a young tree with many branches reaching out from the trunk.

In order to create a strong, international recovery network, The Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery is facilitating  three-day conference that gathers people from across the United States and around the world who are learning, facilitating, and practicing WRAP. The purposes of the WRAP Around the World Conference are to 1) disseminate the most creative, exciting, and effective developments in the field of WRAP today; 2) transfer new skills to people who are utilizing WRAP in innovative recovery programs and in their own lives; 3) network hundreds of passionate and committed WRAP mentors across the world to join forces and leverage their potential; and 4) inspire conference participants to take their new knowledge and skills back to their own communities and make WRAP a living source of healing and transformation at the grassroots level.

The 2011 World Conference is offering animated by compelling, diverse, and well-researched presentations by issuing a world-wide call for papers.  Examples of the domains for presentations include:

 1) Understanding the ethics and values;

 2) Ensuring fidelity to the original principles;

 3) Disseminating the research on recovery outcomes;

 4) Promoting high quality practices in training program facilitators;

 5) Promoting effective approaches in program implementation;

 6) Incorporating WRAP into formal systems of care;

 7) Developing and replicating non-profit and for-profit business models;

 8) Application of WRAP to specific perspectives (challenges of addictions, children, family members, military veterans, people with other health issues, Cultural perspectives etc.; and

 9) Living WRAP: strategies for helping people implement WRAP in their everyday lives.

The Conference will also feature Dr. Mary Ellen Copeland and Dr Arthur C. Evans as the keynote speakers, a major presentation by Matthew Federici, the Copeland Center's Executive Director, and plenary sessions led by other experts from the field.  Individuals who share specific professions (e.g. Certified Peer Specialists, Mental Health Professionals, WRAP Educators, etc.) and those who belong to unique constituencies (mental health consumers, people in recovery from substance abuse, people of color in recovery, etc.) will have an opportunity to participate in caucus sessions and present workshops.
